MK City Council announce plans to demolish Serpentine Court as part of Lakes Estate regeneration plans

Milton Keynes City Council have announced plans to demolish Serpentine Court as part of their Lakes Estate regeneration project.

The City Council said that they will take a decision next week to demolish the location, which follows the completion of 183 new modern, energy-efficient council homes earlier this year that local families have already moved into.

MK City Council said that demolishing Serpentine Court would unlock the site’s future housing potential, subject to funding, with any redevelopment potentially supported through the Government’s latest Social and Affordable Homes Programme (SAHP).

In addition, the City Council said the decision would also remove the building and prevent it from generating significant management, maintenance, and security costs.

Demolition is intended to mark another major milestone in the wider transformation of the Lakes Estate. Alongside community and local amenity spaces, work is ongoing to deliver an improved and refurbished park.

The regeneration programme has been shaped by years of engagement with local residents, who played a central role in developing the plans approved in 2022. The scheme is being funded through almost £70 million investment from Milton Keynes City Council, supported by a grant of just under £15 million from Homes England.

Cabinet Member for Housing, Cllr Ed Hume, said, “The Lakes Estate regeneration is already making a real difference for residents, with 183 new council homes completed and families benefiting from high-quality, energy-efficient homes, alongside new parks and improved community spaces.

“We know Serpentine Court holds a special place in the community and that many local people raised their families there. Its history and memories will always be part of the Lakes Estate story, but the building has now reached the end of its life. Demolishing Serpentine Court would allow us to move this regeneration project forward, improve the area and create the opportunity to deliver even more council homes for local people in the years ahead.”
