Luton take the points after seeing off Stockport

Luton returned to winning ways after a 2-0 home win over Stockport County in League One.

The Hatters had conceded 5 on a miserable trip to Mansfield in their previous outing, but second half goals by Nahki Wells and Callum Marshall did the job as Jack Wilshere’s side returned to winning ways.

The result saw Luton pick up their first home league win of the new campaign, and their first success in the league since the opening match of the season.

Luton had arrived seeking a response after a heavy defeat at Mansfield in their previous outing, as they welcomed a Stockport side they beat in the EFL Trophy final last season.

But Stockport nearly found the breakthrough, as just before the half-hour mark, a firm hit by Harry Wood was denied by Luton keeper Josh Keeley.

The hosts then had a chance of their own as a snapshot from Wells would be well saved by Stockport’s Oliver Whatmuff.

Wells would open the scoring after the break, as five minutes into the second half, the experienced striker was in the right place to meet the ball after Whatmuff could only parry Harrison Ashby’s cross and he duly sent the ball into the back of the net.

Stockport were very close to a quick equaliser when a free-kick from experienced midfielder Oliver Norwood hit the inside of the post and bounced free.

But with just over 15 minutes to go, Luton would grab a second goal as Marshall picked up a pass from Jamie Donley and duly walloped in a fine strike from long range.

The Hatters would duly preserve their lead, getting their first clean sheet of the new campaign. Remarkably, Luton have scored and conceded 10 goals in their opening matches of the campaign.

Wilshere’s side will have another home contest on Saturday when they face Leyton Orient at Kenilworth Road.
