Milton Keynes City Council is helping young people, including those who are not currently in employment, education or training (NEET) build confidence, learn new skills and connect with others through an allotment project in New Bradwell.
Since the City Council's Youth Team took over the plot in January, more than 100 young people have rolled up their sleeves and got involved in transforming the space while gaining practical experience and spending time outdoors.
Young people have helped to grow a wide range of fruit and vegetables, including apples, pears, plums and pumpkins, as well as building raised beds, creating bird feeders and bird baths, and helping to maintain the allotment.
The project is just one of the many ways Milton Keynes City Council supports young people who are not currently in education, employment or training. The specialist team also provides one-to-one careers advice and guidance; help with CV writing, job applications and interview skills; life skills programmes with confidence-building activities; and helps young people find training, apprenticeships and jobs.
The City Council also provides targeted support for care leavers and young people with additional needs, helping them take positive next steps towards their future.
“The allotment project is a great example of the support our Youth Team provides for young people across Milton Keynes. While participants are learning practical skills and building confidence through gardening, it is just one part of a much wider package of support that helps young people develop resilience and find ways into learning and jobs.”- Councillor Peter Cannon, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People
The Council is using the Government’s Crisis and Resilience Fund, to support the Allotments.
