Extreme heat warning in place for Milton Keynes as another heatwave arrives

An amber weather warning for extreme heat is in place in Milton Keynes ahead of a high heatwave today (13/08).

Temperatures are forecast to rise to as high as 36 degrees Celsius today, with the Met Office issuing a weather warning. The warning will be in place between 9am and midnight.

In their guidance, the Met Office said that very high temperatures may lead to impacts on Thursday.

The guidance says that adverse health effects are likely to be experienced by those vulnerable to extreme heat and that the wider population is likely to experience some adverse health effects including sunburn or heat exhaustion (dehydration, nausea, fatigue) and other heat-related illnesses.

Some changes in working practices and daily routines likely to be required while some heat sensitive systems and equipment may fail, with the potential for some power cuts and the loss of other services to some homes and businesses.

A warning also says that some delays to road, rail and air travel are possible, with potential for welfare issues for those who experience prolonged delays

More people are likely to visit coastal areas, lakes and rivers leading to an increased risk of water safety incidents.

The latest spike comes in a very hot and dry summer. The latest heat spike is the fifth heatwave experienced in the UK this summer, which has been among the hottest and driest on record.
