The police are launching a new police dogs initiative

After going from strength to strength and securing huge successes within our Dog Section, we are pleased to announce our exciting new initiative to launch our operational police dogs into several additional departments across Northamptonshire Police.

After rigorous rounds of assessment, we have carefully considered the paw-fect roles for some of our top dogs, and successfully began the roll-out last month.

Starting with a trial period of four dogs, the section will be looking to roll-out this initiative across the organisation, building upon the fantastic achievements so far demonstrated by our canine colleagues.

Buster, a Lhasa Apso, has taken on the role of a Call Handler within our Force Control Room, ready and waiting to answer 101 and 999 calls.

Devon, a fox red Labrador, has joined our Garage team and has wasted no time in getting his paws dirty.

Theodore, a Chow Chow, has teamed up with our IT services department to deliver the very best tech support to all our officers and staff.

Dougie, a 10-month-old wire-haired Dachshund, is using his youth and speed within our response teams to bring criminals to justice.

Inspector Colin Newport, of the Force’s Dog Section, said: “Buster, Devon, Theodore and Dougie each smashed their assessments for this initiative, and I’m excited to hear about all of the fantastic proactive work they’ll be getting up to.

“Our general purpose and specialist search police dogs have a huge range of skills, and we recognised a gap in our capabilities for more hands-on support across the organisation. The departments have all been excited to get the dogs on board and introduce team members of the more hairier, four-legged variety.

“Here in Northants, we like to do things a little differently, and I am sure the success of this initiative will lead the way for other forces across the country.”
