Northampton Town continued their winless start to the new season after a 1-0 loss away at Crewe Alexandra.
Josh March scored the only goal of the game after he took advantage of a misjudgement by Cobblers keeper Zach Jeacock early in the second half.
The Cobblers had created lots of chances in the first half of the contest in Cheshire, but an inability to take one means Northampton are yet to taste victory in any of their first four competitive outings of the new season.
The visitors had made a bright start at The Mornflake Stadium, with Logan Briggs having one strike denied by Crewe keeper Tom Booth and another go over.
Booth also denied a long range hit by Connor Lemonheigh-Evans, while Harvey Saunders fired over and James Maxwell hit the post.
Crewe had come close when Jeacock denied Callum Agius in the home side’s first major chance, but a goal opened the scoring for the hosts in the 53rd minute in an unorthodox fashion.
March had gone off the pitch when chasing a through-pass that went through to Jeacock. But the Crewe striker ended up lurking behind the Northampton keeper anticipating he roll the ball out, and when Jeacock duly did, March swooped in to seize the ball and poke in the opening goal.
Booth made a pair of saves to thwart Elliot List late on, but the Cobblers were unable to recover as they slid to a first league defeat of the new campaign.
Northampton will look to try and pick up a first win of the new campaign next time out, when they make the trip to Kent to face Gillingham next Saturday.
