Northampton Town got their first win of the new season with a 1-0 win over Newport County in front of representatives of their prospective new investors.
Joe O’Brien-Whitmarsh scored a late winner as the Cobblers beat the Welsh club at Sixfields, with Chris Hogg seeing his side grab their first league win of the new season at the fifth attempt. The Cobblers are up to 6 points for the season so far.
Victory was under the watchful eye of several representatives from prospective new Northampton investors Sports Alpha Capital, who the Cobblers confirmed the day before have been granted approval to purchase a stake in the club. One noteworthy figure who came to Sixfields was retired Brazilian international Alexander Pato, with the former Chelsea and AC Milan star a named investor in the consortium.
The Cobblers had some chances in the first half, with Harvey Saunders denied by Newport keeper Jordan Wright and O’Brien-Whitmarsh curling an effort wide of the mark.
A tight contest saw chances at a premium, with Ciaran Brennan firing over a few moments after half-time for the visitors, while Wright made a save to deny one time Newport loanee Nathan Opoku.
The crucial moment came after 87 minutes, as a misplaced clearance was picked up O’Brien-Whitmarsh and the new signing was able to fire home a fine strike.
Warhurst was denied a second by Wright late on, but the Cobblers ground out the victory to send their fans home happy.
Northampton are next in action next Saturday when they visit Shrewsbury Town in their next League Two outing.
