Midfielder Liam Kelly leaves MK Dons to join Peterborough United

Liam Kelly has left MK Dons after the midfielder signed for their fellow League One outfit Peterborough United.

The 30-year-old midfielder has signed what Peterborough describe as a “long-term contract” after moving for an undisclosed fee.

Kelly leaves after two years at MK Dons, with his second and final season at the club seeing him named the Dons’ Player of the Year and Player’s Player of the Year as well as making the League Two Team of the Season as the Dons won promotion last season.

After joining MK Dons from Crawley in 2024, he made 87 appearances in all competitions, scoring 3 times and grabbing 13 assists in his time at the club.

The midfielder was one of three signings made by a Posh side now managed by former Dons coach Luke Williams today (13/08), with Peterborough also signing Ethan Williams and Vernon Masara from Manchester United and Burnley respectively.

Williams told the official Peterborough site that he was excited to bring Kelly to London Road ahead of the upcoming season.

He said, “Liam is a really talented player, an experienced midfielder who joins us off the back of a brilliant season with Milton Keynes Dons.

“I think it is a really positive signing, he will bring quality and help us control the middle of the pitch and I am really looking forward to working with him. He is someone that can handle the ball, read the game, understand the opposition from a tactical point of view and he will be a real asset to us.”

MK Dons’ Sporting Director Liam Sweeting said the Dons initially wanted Kelly to stay, but respected his wish to move on.

He said, “Liam has received an offer from Peterborough United which provides him with an opportunity to secure his future.

“Paul and I have spoken with Liam and understand his position, and we felt it was important to respect that opportunity and not stand in his way.

“Naturally, we would have liked Liam to remain with us as we move into League One, but we also respect his decision and the opportunity he has been presented with. He leaves with our very best wishes and will always be remembered fondly for the contribution he made to our promotion last season.

“Beyond his performances, Liam has been an excellent person to have around the football club. He has shown great professionalism and commitment throughout his time here, and he leaves with the respect of everyone at MK Dons.

“We thank him for his efforts over the last two seasons and wish him every success for the future.”
