An amber weather warning for extreme heat has been issued by the Met Office for southern England including Milton Keynes ahead of an expected heatwave.
The Met Office issued the warning ahead of a heatwave that will be centred around southern and eastern England initially, and which is set to develop over the weekend before continuing into the start of next week.
The warning for extreme heat primarily covers Monday (22/06) and Tuesday (23/06), when the heat is forecast to be at its strongest.
Temperatures in the Milton Keynes area are currently forecast to peak at 31 degrees on the Tuesday, as per the forecast at 7pm on June 19th.
Expected things to look out for in the face of the high heat is that more people are likely to visit coastal areas, lakes and rivers leading to an increased risk of water safety incidents.
Adverse health effects are likely to be experienced by those vulnerable to extreme heat, with the wider population likely to experience some adverse health effects including sunburn or heat exhaustion (dehydration, nausea, fatigue) and other heat related illnesses.
Some delays to road, rail and air travel are possible, with potential for welfare issues for those who experience prolonged delays. Some changes in working practices and daily routines are also likely to be required.
The guidance also advised that there is an increased chance that some heat-sensitive systems and equipment may fail, leading to power cuts and the loss of other services to some homes and businesses
Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Greg Wolverson said, “While heatwave criteria will be met for some in the south and southeast of England over the weekend, with temperatures into the low 30s Celsius possible, the warmth will expand and intensify at the start of next week, which, coupled with high temperatures overnight, leads to potential impacts.
“Temperatures will peak around the mid-30s Celsius on Monday and Tuesday. The humidity will also mean this feels close, warmer and more uncomfortable for many. Tropical nights – where the temperature doesn’t drop below 20°C are also likely for some.”
The news comes amid strong heat across much of western Europe, with high temperatures also expected in France, Germany and Spain among others.
