Milton Keynes City Council has marked the launch of the city’s newest food larder in Fishermead.
The city council is helping to subsidise community food larders as part of its work to support residents who are struggling with the cost of living, including giving local people practical advice and financial support as well as helping them source affordable food.
The new larder will serve as a local neighbourhood club which will require a subscription. Weekly memberships are just £4.50 for an individual and £9 for a family and will provide up to £15 worth of subsidised fresh food each week. The larder is open every Wednesday from 11:30am until 1pm.
The aim is to save waste and give people access to cheaper food, as well as providing a chance to meet neighbours and find useful council services. People using community larders don’t need to be means tested or on specific benefits.
The food larder has been set up with SOFEA, a regional charity partner that works to support children and families.
“Local residents will be pleased to see another community larder opening in Fishermead. Community larders provide an important alternative to emergency food support, giving families the opportunity to buy a range of fresh and nutritious food at a low cost. We know that many people continue to feel the impact of rising living costs, and we're committed to working with our partners to provide practical support where it's needed most.”- Councillor Donna Fuller, Cabinet Member for Adults, Health and Communities
