Northampton confirm arrival of Nathan Opoku from Leicester

Northampton Town have signed striker Nathan Opoku from Leicester for an undisclosed fee.

The Cobblers confirmed the 25-year-old Ghanian striker has signed a three year contract at Sixfields and becomes the club’s 10th new signing of the summer transfer window.

Opoku scored six goals last season in League Two in a loan move for Newport County, being the top scorer as the Welsh side stayed in the division.

Since joining the Foxes from US-based side Ventura County Fusion in 2023, Opoku also had loan spells with Leicester’s affiliated Belgian side OH Leuven.

In a statement, Northampton boss Chris Hogg said he felt Opoku offered another option in the attacking areas as the Cobblers prepare to continue their season.

He said, “We believe Nathan is another good signing for the club.

“He has had a different journey to most players but that has helped him gain a good breadth of knowledge and experience and he is an excellent age. He has spent the last three years at Leicester City and enjoyed loan spells both in Europe and last season in League Two so he knows the level and he has scored goals at this level.

“He’ll bring more depth and competition to the forward line and he has pace and power in his game.

“We have tracked Nathan for a while so we know all about him, we have done our homework and we know he is hardworking, has an excellent attitude and is a good person, he is a good character and a good player.

“He is driven and ambitious and he will give us different options, different strengths and more variation in attacking areas.”
