Luton to visit Chelsea in Second Round of Carabao Cup

Luton Town will be visiting Chelsea in the Second Round of the Carabao Cup.

The Hatters’ reward for beating League Two outfit Gillingham in the First Round is a trip to West London to take on the Premier League giants, who enter in the Second Round this season after only finishing 10th last season and failing to qualify for European football.

The tie will take place in the week beginning Monday 24 August, with a specific date, ticket information and details of TV coverage to be announced in due course.

The match is scheduled to take place between Luton’s games against Notts County on 22 August and Mansfield on 29 August. Chelsea are currently scheduled to be playing on 24 August in their Premier League season opener against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Luton will be playing Chelsea for the fifth time in the last 5 years, with the Hatters having drawn Chelsea in the FA Cup in 2021 and 2023, as well as taking on the Hatters in the Premier League during their single season in the top flight in the 2023/24 season. The Hatters have not beaten Chelsea since 1991.

Chelsea are seeking a rebuild next season under former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso, who won the Bundesliga title at Bayer Leverkusen and had a stint in charge of Real Madrid last season. The Blues failed to qualify for Europe last season. Chelsea do have a bright record in the Carabao Cup, having won the competition 5 times, although they have not won it in 2015.
