This week (2-8 November) is Occupational Therapy Week, and Milton Keynes City Council is shining a spotlight on the work of its Occupational Therapy teams.

Occupational Therapists work with adults who are finding everyday activities difficult to do, helping them to maintain or regain their independence. Their support can range from providing practical advice on moving safely around the home to recommending and arranging specialist aids, adaptations and longer-term solutions tailored to individual needs.

In the past year, the team has helped almost 2,000 residents with measures such as hoists, grab rails and bathing aids, as well as larger home adaptations including level-access showers and stairlifts.

This helps residents remain safe and independent at home for longer, while also reducing pressure on the NHS by helping to prevent hospital admissions.

“Our Occupational Therapists make a real difference to residents every day, helping people stay safe, independent and confident in their own homes. Whether it's providing specialist equipment, recommending adaptations or supporting someone after a fall, their expertise helps improve quality of life and can prevent the need for more intensive care and support.”
- Councillor Donna Fuller, Cabinet Member for Adults, Health and Communities
“Having had several falls and broken bones, I was becoming increasingly worried about managing at home. Occupational Therapists took the time to listen to my concerns and walked around my flat with me, identifying ways to make everyday tasks safer. I now have a handrail and step to help me use the shower, as well as a rail and doorstep outside my front door. These improvements have made a huge difference and given me much more confidence. I'm extremely grateful to this team at the council for helping me stay independent in my own home.”
- 88-year-old resident Barbara
