MK Dons beaten on trip to Wigan Athletic

MK Dons suffered their first league defeat of the season after a 3-1 loss away at Wigan Athletic.

Two goals by Jensen Weir and one by Max Power won the game for Gary Caldwell’s side, with substitute Aaron Collins scoring a late consolation for the visitors.

Defeat at the Brick Community Stadium means that MK Dons are still waiting for their first league win of the new campaign.

Having drawn all of their opening three games of the new season, MK Dons had been hopeful for better things away at a Wigan side who’d begun the season with three defeats out of three.

After an even opening, Wigan began to press, with Dara Costelloe firing wide when well placed before Craig MacGillivray made a good save to deny the home side’s Reggie Walsh.

Just before the half-hour, Wigan felt they should’ve taken the lead when Fraser Murray saw a strike hit the post and after Costelloe sliced the rebound, Murray had a second go at it that was cleared off the line by Curtis Nelson.

This failed to wake MK Dons up, however, and they fell behind just after the half-hour mark, as Weir smashed a strike from outside the box that MacGillivray couldn’t stop from finding the back of the net.

This would lead to a rally from the visitors in the final stages of the first half, as Callum Paterson fired wide from close range before Sam Nombe was denied by Joe Whitworth and the Wigan keeper would again deny Nombe in a scramble at the consequent corner.

But the visitors’ night would get worse just after half-time as Wigan scored again in the 47th minute. MK Dons could only half-clear a corner and Power duly thumped a strike into the back of the net.

Wigan duly made it 3-0 in the 73rd minute, as a cross from the Latics’ left was dabbed on by Brad Burrowes for Weir to steer past MacGillivray and grab his second.

MK Dons would score a late consolation when Marvin Ekpiteta’s pass released Collins, who duly ran forward and scored. But it was not enough to spark an unlikely comeback.

The result means the Dons remain winless ahead of this Saturday’s Buckinghamshire Derby with Wycombe Wanderers, who like Paul Warne’s side are also without a win in League One after the first four games of the campaign.
