Liverpool's owners have confirmed a consortium featuring Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has concluded an agreement to buy a minority stake in the club.
It is understood Fenway Sports Group has sold around one third of the Reds in a deal first revealed by Sky News City editor Mark Kleinman, which values the club at more than $7bn (£5.2bn).
Completing one of the richest sports deals ever is a sign of the club's resurgence during 16 years of Fenway's ownership.
The owners of baseball's Boston Red Sox, who remain in overall control of Liverpool, paid only £300m when the Anfield side was in financial distress.
The incoming 1892 Holdings consortium is led by Amit Bhatia, who sold his stake in Queens Park Rangers recently to buy into Liverpool.
He is backed by the wealth of his father-in-law, steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, and will become vice chairman of Liverpool.
Mr Bhatia said: "We have the utmost respect and admiration for FSG as owners and for everything they have achieved at Anfield.
"To be welcomed as a partner in a club of this stature is a huge privilege. We are making this investment because we believe deeply in Liverpool and its leadership, and we look forward to supporting the club's continued success for years to come."
Mr Bhatia will be joining the board along with two other members of the consortium - Elaine Saverin, whose husband Eduardo is one of the co-founders of Facebook, and entrepreneur Bryan Baum.
Mr Bezos - whose fortune is estimated by Forbes to be over $280bn - will not be joining the board.
Football authorities, including the new regulator, still need to approve the investors to complete the deal.
Liverpool have not been short of cash, spending around £500m signing new players over the past year.
With Mr Bezos buying a stake, fans will see the possibility of having a mega-rich tycoon as owner one day, but FSG remains the majority owner.

FSG president Mike Gordon said: "Liverpool has always been built by thinking beyond one season and making decisions with the club's long-term interests in mind.
"That approach continues to attract interest from respected investors and business leaders around the world.
"As we considered this opportunity, it became clear that Amit and the consortium shared our long-term philosophy and appreciation for what makes Liverpool special.
"Their experience and perspective will complement the strong foundation already in place, and we look forward to working together."
Liverpool are a week away from beginning the new Premier League season with Andoni Iraola leading the bid to regain the title after Arne Slot was sacked in May despite winning the trophy a year earlier.
