The operators of a laundrette in Daventry have been convicted and ordered to pay a total of £2,586 for failing to comply with their commercial waste duty of care obligations.
Following an investigation by West Northamptonshire Council’s Environmental Crime Team into waste issues in Tamar Square, Mr Ranjit Randhawa and Mrs Sarbjit Randhawa, owners of ‘Daventry Laundrette’, appeared at Wellingborough Magistrates’ Court on 16 June 2026.
They pleaded guilty to failing to produce Waste Transfer Notes when requested and failing to confirm how waste generated by the business was being lawfully disposed of. WNC were represented by Scott Howkins.
Businesses are legally required to ensure that all commercial waste is transferred to an authorised person and that appropriate documentation is retained for a minimum of two years. This documentation must be provided to the Local Authority upon request.
In this case, the defendants failed to meet these requirements and were each fined £416, with additional costs of £711 and a victim surcharge of £166.
Cllr Andrew Last – Cabinet Member for HR, Corporate and Regulatory Services said: “Businesses are required to have appropriate waste management provisions in place to prevent the unlawful deposit or escape of waste.
“Disposing of commercial waste via domestic waste services is an offence and may lead to enforcement action being taken. Our Environmental Crime team will take robust action against those acting outside of the legal parameters for waste offences.”
