Residents urged to take extra care during amber heat health alert

Residents across West Northamptonshire are being urged to take extra care as an amber heat health alert and extreme heat warning come into force this week.

The warning, issued by the UK Health Security Agency and Met Office, means that hot weather is expected to have a greater impact on people’s health and wellbeing, particularly for older residents, young children and those with existing health conditions.

Temperatures are expected to rise into the 30s, with hot and humid conditions increasing the risk of heat-related illness and putting additional pressure on health and care services.

Simple steps can make a big difference in helping you and others stay safe during the hot weather.

Stay safe in the heat

Residents are advised to:

  • Drink plenty of fluids and stay hydrated
  • Keep out of the sun between 11am and 3pm
  • Stay in the shade, wear sunscreen and a hat if you are outdoors
  • Keep your home cool by closing curtains on sun-facing rooms
  • Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day
  • Check on vulnerable neighbours, friends and family

Hot weather can also increase the risk of water‑related incidents, so people are urged to take extra care around rivers, lakes and open water. Visit the Royal Life Saving Society for guidance on summer water safety.

Look out for those most at risk

While many people enjoy the warmer weather, high temperatures can be dangerous for some. Older people, those living alone, people with long-term health conditions, and babies and young children are particularly at risk.

Checking in on others and making sure they have the support they need can help prevent serious health issues.
