There are some shows that you walk out of feeling better than when you went in, and Mamma Mia! is absolutely one of them.

Playing at Milton Keynes Theatre, the opening night was packed and the atmosphere was energised with the anticipation and expectation of a good night ahead. High energy, uplifting and just enormous fun, this is a show that knows exactly what its audience has come for and delivers it in gold plated fashion!

The production itself is fantastic. Led by Jenn Griffin as Donna Sheridan, Hazel Baldwin as Sophie Sheridan, and Sarah Earnshaw as Tanya, the main cast feel completely right for their roles. Alongside them, Richard Taylor Woods (Sam Carmichael), Arvid Larsen (Harry Bright), and Simon Victor (Bill Austin) keep the vocals strong throughout, and of course, having that incredible catalogue of ABBA music behind it all gives the whole evening an infectious energy.

A special mention has to go to the supporting cast—including Lauren Woolf as Rosie and Samuel George Downey as Sky—who were absolutely fantastic. They brought so much energy to the stage and genuinely looked as though they were having the time of their lives performing the show. That enthusiasm really came across and added so much to the bigger ensemble numbers.

What I particularly loved was that underneath all the colour, music and fun, there’s still plenty of heart. It’s funny, emotional and wonderfully feel good without trying too hard.

By the end of the night, the entire theatre was ready to join the party. Everyone was on their feet, the atmosphere was electric and you could feel and hear just how much the audience had enjoyed themselves.

Mamma Mia! is everything you want from a big night at the theatre: brilliant music, fantastic performances, plenty of laughs and a whole lot of joy.

A standout show, an absolute must see for musical theatre fans, and one I would happily sit through all over again.
