Milton Keynes Lightning beat Solway IHC 5-4 at Planet Ice Milton Keynes on 4 October, taking two NIHL National points from a game that tightened considerably in the final period. Danny Weight scored twice as Lightning moved from 2-1 down to 5-2 ahead, but Solway answered with two late goals. Jordan Buesa’s hat-trick left the visitors one goal short after a spirited reply.
With Jordan Hedley in goal for Milton Keynes Lightning and Dershahn Stewart in goal for Solway IHC, Jordan Buesa gave Solway the lead at 06:19, scoring shorthanded while Torran Anderson was serving a two-minute hooking penalty. Owen Cole assisted the goal, which put the visitors ahead despite Lightning having an extra skater. MKL’s equaliser came at even strength at 14:49. Jarred White scored from Kell Beattie and Ed Knaggs to make it 1-1, the score at the first interval. Lightning had 15 shots to Solway’s five in the opening 20 minutes, but the teams remained level.
A Lightning penalty late in the first period carried into the second. Mack Stewart received two minutes for slashing at 19:52, and Buesa scored on the resulting power play at 21:24. Cole and Alex Johnston supplied the assists as Solway regained the lead, 2-1. It was Buesa’s second goal in different special-teams situations, and MKL had to find another equaliser. Ed Knaggs served a two-minute tripping penalty at 26:34, but there was no change to the score before Lightning’s next opportunity with an extra skater.
Scott Henderson’s two-minute tripping penalty at 29:28 gave MKL that opportunity. Liam Stewart equalised on the power play at 30:32, assisted by Bradey Johnson and Beattie. With the game at 2-2, the next goal would give either side a lead to take into the final period. Henderson was penalised again at 38:05, this time receiving two minutes for clipping. Weight put Lightning in front on the power play at 39:53, with David Thomson and Archie Hazeldine assisting. There were just seven seconds left in the middle period when MKL moved ahead 3-2.
That late goal became the start of Lightning’s decisive scoring run. Weight scored again at 43:13, assisted by Thomson, to give the home side its first two-goal lead of the game. Hazeldine then added a fifth at 46:55 from Johnson and Carter Hamill, extending the margin to 5-2. Those two third-period goals were scored at even strength, after Lightning’s pair of power-play goals had turned the game around in the second. Weight finished with two goals, while Thomson assisted both of them.
Solway did not leave the three-goal gap untouched. Dylan Murray reduced it at 50:37, with Callum Boyd and Liam Stenton credited with the assists. Buesa struck again at 54:56 from Olivier Arseneau and Johnston, completing his hat-trick and bringing the visitors within one at 5-4. His first goal had put Solway ahead shorthanded and his second had restored their lead on the power play; the third gave the closing minutes a very different scoreline from the one at 46:55.
There was no further scoring, leaving Hazeldine’s goal as the one that ultimately separated the sides. The third-period shots were eight apiece, and Lightning finished with 36 to Solway’s 22 overall. MKL’s two power-play goals were central to overturning the visitors’ second lead, but Solway’s late response made this a one-goal finish. Hazeldine added an assist to his goal, while Beattie and Johnson each supplied two assists in the 5-4 home win.
