Northampton play out draw with Premier League newboys Coventry in home pre-season friendly

Northampton continued their pre-season preparations with a 0-0 draw against Premier League newboys Coventry City at Sixfields.

The Cobblers played out a draw with their former tenants at Sixfields as Coventry prepare to play in the Premier League for the first time since 2001, in a game that saw Northampton do the job at frustrating Coventry’s attacking players.

The game was Northampton’s second pre-season friendly, having lost a match behind closed doors against Leicester 3-0 at the Foxes’ training ground the previous weekend.

Chris Hogg was taking charge at Sixfields for the first time and Northampton had a productive first half as they frustrated Coventry while they had the best chance as Sam Hoskins fired over.

Coventry improved after a raft of half-time chances, with Frank Onyeka seeing an effort deflected wide while Jon Guthrie would head over for the home side.

Hogg opted to make wholesale changes with just over 20 minutes to play, but an injury to Conor McCarthy saw Northampton play with 10 players in the final stages.

But Coventry couldn’t find a way through with their man advantage, with Norman Bassette having two efforts saved by Ross Fitzsimons before he put another wide as the game ended goalless.

Northampton’s pre-season schedule still has 4 more games before opening with their Carabao Cup trip to Leicester on August 8th. The Cobblers will play Southend away in midweek, host Birmingham City next weekend and then have away days at Cambridge United and Solihull Moors.
