Northampton defeated again after home loss to Barnsley

Northampton Town suffered a 10th consecutive league loss as they were beaten 1-0 at home by Barnsley.

Reyes Cleary scored the only goal of the game for the Tykes as the midtable Yorkshiremen got the points, while Northampton’s malaise carried on as they suffered another reverse.

The reverse was Northampton’s 11th straight loss in all competitions, extending what is now a club record for consecutive defeats while the 10 straight league reverses matches the longest recorded in the top 4 tiers of English football this season. A victory elsewhere for Port Vale also confirmed that Northampton are now guaranteed to finish bottom of League One.

A tight game would be decided in Barnsley’s favour after 37 minutes, as Cleary received Patrick Kelly’s pass, cut inside and placed home a curling effort.

The Cobblers had a few chances to find a way through with Kyle McAdam hitting the side netting, Dean Campbell firing wide just after half-time and Kieren Flavell keeping out an attempt by Conor McCarthy, but there was no way through for the hosts.

Barnsley had come close a few times before scoring as Tom Bradshaw and David McGoldrick missed the target, while during the second half, Adam Phillips missed a chance from close range, but one ultimately proved to be enough for the visitors.

Northampton have one final assignment at the end of their troubled campaign when they welcome play-off chasing Plymouth Argyle to Sixfields for the final match of the season.
