Former Northampton midfielder Cameron McGeehan makes return to Barnsley

Former Northampton Town midfielder Cameron McGeehan has returned to Barnsley after leaving the Cobblers.

McGeehan has signed a one-year deal at Oakwell with option to stay for an extra year, with the 31-year-old moving under freedom of contract after leaving Northampton following their relegation to League 2 last season.

The Northern Irish international previously played for Barnsley for 3 seasons, making 68 appearances in his first spell with the Yorkshire club and helping them win promotion to the Championship in the 2018/19 campaign.

McGeehan had joined Northampton in 2024 after leaving Colchester. He had been a regular for the Cobblers in his stay with the club, making 82 appearances in all competitions and scoring 18 times.

The move also sees McGeehan reunited with Daniel Stendel, who managed the Tykes for the 2018/19 promotion-winning campaign and who was recently re-appointed Head Coach of the League One side.

In a statement, Stendel said: “I am very happy to welcome Cameron back to Barnsley. He is a player I know extremely well and someone who understands exactly how I want my teams to play.

“His energy, pressing and mentality were very important to us before, and I am confident he will bring those same qualities again. Cameron is a leader on and off the pitch, and he will add experience and intensity to our squad. I am really pleased to be working with him again.”
