One person dies and two others taken to hospital after fire at London tower block

One person has died and two others were taken to hospital after a fire in a 17th-floor flat in east London.

About 70 firefighters tackled the blaze after London Fire Brigade was called to the scene in Poplar at 4.35am on Saturday. About 10 fire engines were dispatched.

Half of a property on the 17th floor of the 22-storey block of residential flats in Blackwall Way was damaged.

The blaze was brought under control by 6.41am.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 4.44am to reports of a fire in Blackwall Way, Poplar.

"We sent ambulance crews, our tactical response unit, an incident response officer and paramedics from our hazardous area response team to the scene. We also dispatched London's air ambulance."

They added: "Sadly, a person was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other patients were taken to hospital, and a third was treated at the scene and discharged."

London Fire Brigade said: "The brigade's 999 control officers were called at 04.35 and mobilised crews from Poplar, Whitechapel, Plaistow, Stratford, Shadwell, East Ham, East Greenwich, Bethnal Green and Greenwich fire stations.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation."
