Telford Tigers 1-6 – Milton Keynes Lightning: three first-period goals gave Lightning an advantage they maintained throughout their NIHL National visit to Telford Ice Rink on 20 September. Telford reduced the deficit early in the second period, but Sean Norris answered less than two minutes later, and Danny Weight completed a two-goal game in the third.
With Brad Day in goal for Telford Tigers and Jordan Hedley in goal for Milton Keynes Lightning, Liam Stewart put Lightning ahead at 05:28, assisted by Carter Hamill and Archie Hazeldine. The visitors had to wait more than ten minutes for their second goal, which came with an extra skater. Telford’s Jérémy Michaud received two minutes for cross-checking at 14:00, and Weight scored on the power play at 15:47, with Hazeldine and David Thomson assisting.
Lightning added another just 66 seconds later. Hamill scored at even strength from Stewart and Bradey Johnson to make it 0-3 at 16:53. Stewart and Hamill had each contributed a goal and an assist to the early lead, while Hazeldine had assisted on the first two goals. MKL took that three-goal advantage into the first interval, having recorded 19 shots on goal to Telford’s 10.
The second period began with penalties to both teams at 20:39. Telford’s Danny Rose received two minutes for hooking, while Lightning’s Kell Beattie received two minutes for diving and a further 10-minute misconduct for the same offence. The two-minute penalties ran at the same time; neither was behind the next goal. Max Dukovac gave the Tigers a reply at even strength at 23:20, assisted by Finley Howells and Nick Oliver. Telford had cut the gap to 1-3, giving Lightning a narrower lead to protect.
That gap lasted only 1:41. Norris scored unassisted at 25:01 to restore the visitors’ three-goal margin at 1-4. It was an important response to Telford’s only goal of the game: rather than carrying a two-goal deficit further into the period, the Tigers again faced the same margin they had trailed by at the first break.
Jarred White extended the lead at 34:40, with Harry Gulliver and James Griffin supplying the assists. His goal made it 1-5, the score at the second interval. Lightning had added two goals after Dukovac’s reply, while Telford had no further scoring answer in the middle period. The shot count for those 20 minutes was 22 for MKL and nine for the Tigers.
Telford recorded nine shots in the final period to Lightning’s three, but the only goal came from the visitors. Weight scored his second at 47:34, assisted by Hamill and Thomson, to take the score to 1-6. It was an even-strength goal, following his power-play strike in the opening period.
Beattie received two minutes for tripping at 52:44, and Michaud and Lightning’s Archie Salisbury were each given two minutes for roughing at 54:16. Neither side added to the score. Lightning finished with 44 shots on goal to Telford’s 28 and took two NIHL National points from a win built on their three-goal first period and their quick response to Dukovac’s second-period goal.
