Red Bull have lost their podium finish from last weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix after Alpine successfully overturned a 10-second time penalty issued to Pierre Gasly.
Former Red Bull driver Gasly had finished third on the road during the Monaco Grand Prix, but was handed a 10-second time penalty after picking up two separate 5-second penalties for speeding in the pit lane. This initially saw Gasly classified 7th in the race and third along with the podium prize handed over to Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar for his first podium with the team.
Gasly was one of several drivers who was given a penalty for speeding in the Monaco pitlane. His Alpine teammate Franco Colapinto was also given a 5-second penalty, along with Lewis Hamilton, George Russell and Oscar Piastri.
Alpine formally requested a right to review the decision, and following a re-review of the situation by the FIA yesterday (11/06), the stewards have now opted to cancel the 10 second penalties and reinstate Gasly’s podium. The decision gives Gasly and Alpine their first podium since the Brazilian Grand Prix in 2024.
In their analysis of the conditions that lead to an abnormally high number of pit-lane speeding penalties, the stewards ruled that inaccurate data provided to the FIA by Formula One Management lead to the higher-than-average number of speeding penalties in the race.
The news has lead to reports in multiple sources including Sky Sports and The Race that Red Bull and McLaren have expressed an intent to appeal the decision to cancel Gasly’s penalty. The two teams have until Tuesday (16/06) to decide whether to press ahead with a full appeal. Meanwhile, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has said he has spoken with lawyers regarding Mercedes’ options after their driver George Russell’s race in Monaco was hindered by both the penalty and a failure to serve the penalty correctly.
