Milton Keynes City Council has said work has begun on the long-awaited regeneration of the former Agora site in Wolverton.

A ceremony earlier today saw residents joined local representatives as well as representatives of Milton Keynes City Council and chosen construction partners GRAHAM on site to mark the start of a scheme that will build on the site of the former shopping centre in Milton Keynes.

The scheme will reinstate Radcliffe Street between The Square and Church Street, introduce a network of new routes, and deliver 115 new homes, including 29 homes designed specifically for older residents. It will also provide nine new retail units, creating new opportunities for independent businesses and local traders.

Further improvements include new trees, new landscaped green space, a public toilet and a Brompton Bike Hub, all aimed at creating a safer, more attractive and accessible environment for residents and visitors.

The project focuses on high quality, sustainable homes and new spaces for independent retailers, cafés and local businesses, building on Wolverton’s proud railway heritage and reinforcing its role as a lively and distinctive town centre, delivering long-term benefits residents have campaigned for over many years.

Deputy Leader of MK City Council, Cllr Lauren Townsend, said, “The regeneration of the Agora site is a truly important moment for Wolverton and the wider city. Despite the challenges along the way, it has been shaped and strengthened by the voices, ideas and support of the local community, whose passion and commitment have helped bring these plans to life. This milestone shows what we can achieve together, with new homes, opportunities and a renewed town centre for Wolverton and the wider city.”

Mark Lynch, Managing Director – Building South at GRAHAM, added, “The Agora regeneration project will play a key role in supporting Wolverton for years to come and we’re pleased to partner with Milton Keynes City Council once again to deliver such a transformative development.

“GRAHAM has a strong track record in delivering projects of this scale. Not only will this development provide high-quality homes and community spaces, but it will also support the long-term regeneration of the town centre.

“With construction now underway, we look forward to continuing our strong partnership with Milton Keynes City Council and TOWN to deliver this important scheme.”

MK City Council said that delays to the the project came thanks to COVID, a changing economic climate and major updates to building safety regulations which required the plans to be reviewed and strengthened. With these challenges now addressed, the project is moving forward.

The scheme will see MK City Council again work with GRAHAM, who recently completed the Lakes Estate regeneration project in Bletchley, delivering almost 200 new homes and public realm improvements. Their work was praised by the local community for being carried out professionally and at pace. The appointment follows extensive engagement with Wolverton residents, reflecting the importance of delivering a high‑quality scheme on this landmark site.
