Northampton confirm signing of Lee Evans and departure of Dean Campbell

Northampton Town have confirmed an arrival and a departure in their midfield, with Lee Evans signing for the club and Dean Campbell departing for Notts County.

Evans, 32, has signed an initial one-year contract to move to Sixfields, with the former Welsh international moving to the club after departing Bradford City earlier this summer.

Meanwhile, Campbell has moved to Notts County on a three year deal with the Magpies paying an undisclosed fee that matched a release clause in the 25-year-old’s contract.

Evans’ CV includes multiple promotions, including winning the League One title with Wolves and Wigan, and being a promotion winner with Ipswich Town.

In his career, Evans also received 4 caps with the Welsh national team, while he has also been an EFL mainstay playing for clubs such as Sheffield United, Portsmouth and Blackpool.

The deal to bring Evans to Northampton makes him the Cobblers’ 8th new signing ahead of the upcoming season. He is also the second member of Ipswich’s 2022/23 promotion winning side to move to Sixfields this summer, with defender Janoi Donacien having previously signed for the club.

Cobblers boss Chris Hogg told the club’s official website that the new signing would bring great experience to his dressing room.

He said, “Lee is a vastly experienced player of good quality. He is a leader on and off the field and a real stabilising influence in the dressing room.

“In terms of his ability, he brings a strong competitive edge, he can help us control things in the middle of the pitch and you can tell his quality from the clubs he has played for and the level he has played at.

“We believe he can be a big influence on us, helping shape the dressing room culture and we are delighted to bring a player of Lee’s calibre and quality to Sixfields.”

Meanwhile, Campbell has left Northampton after a single season at Sixfields. The Scottish midfielder had joined from Barrow in 2025 and made 48 appearances in all competitions in his time at the club.

Hogg wished Campbell well in his future endeavours.

He said, “Notts County matched the release clause in Dean’s contract and he expressed an interest in making the move.
