Northampton Town have announced the signing of Manchester City youth striker Matty Warhurst.

The 19-year-old joins the League 2 side for an undisclosed fee and he has signed a 3-year contract at Sixfields. Warhurst becomes Northampton’s 6th signing ahead of the upcoming campaign.

In confirming the signing, Northampton said they were able to get the deal done despite the striker being of interest to multiple other clubs.

Warhurst scored 61 times in 97 appearances for Manchester City’s youth teams, while he has also represented England at youth level including appearing for the Three Lions at the 2023 Under-17 World Cup.

Northampton manager Chris Hogg told the club’s official website that he was excited to see what Warhurst could do for his side.

He said, “He has an excellent pedigree, starting out at Oldham and then coming through the ranks at Manchester City and has scored lots of goals through the age groups. He also has major international tournament experience with England.

“Matty is a poacher and a finisher, he has excellent movement in the final third and a terrific work ethic and attitude and what really stood out to me, right from our very first conversation, was how keen he was to come to Northampton Town. There was a lot of interest in him but this was the club he was really keen to come to and that was exactly what we wanted to hear.

“He has had a lot of success through his development years but now he really wants to get his first team career up and running and that’s exciting both for him and for us.

“As a player, he is a striker who can play on the shoulder of the last defender and run in behind. He is also very good at arriving centrally at the right time.

“We believe he has the hunger, desire and attributes to do well for Northampton Town and that he can be an excellent signing for the club both in the present and for the future.”
