Luton out of Carabao Cup after losing out to Chelsea

Luton Town are out of the Carabao Cup following a 2-0 defeat by Premier League giants Chelsea.

A goal by Blues debutant Danny Welbeck and an own goal by Hakeem Odoffin decided the game in Chelsea’s favour and set up a Third Round tie against Leeds.

Despite a valiant performance, Luton will take no further part in the Carabao Cup after being unable to resist the Blues’ attack to pull off a famous upset. The result was Luton’s first competitive defeat of the new campaign.

Chelsea opened the scoring after 50 minutes when Welbeck headed in Malo Gusto’s cross to put the home side in front on his first competitive appearance for the West Londoners.

The second would come with just over 10 minutes to play, as Odoffin was in the wrong place and unfortunately diverted Estevao’s strike past Josh Keeley.

The Blues had created several chances through the proceedings, with Keeley making smart saves to deny Cole Palmer and Welbeck while Palmer and Morgan Rogers both struck the woodwork.

With the game at 0-0, Luton did have a few opportunities of their own as Mike Penders denied Odoffin and former Chelsea academy graduate Kasey Palmer saw a strike go just wide. Isaiah Jones would also hit the side-netting shortly after the home side’s opener.

Luton’s next action takes place on Sunday when the Hatters return to League 1 action with a visit to Mansfield Town.
