Judith Kerr's Mog’s Christmas at The Royal & Derngate is a gentle, joyful festive treat that feels perfectly pitched for its very young audience. Beautifully put together and thoughtfully staged, this is a highly visual production that brings together three much-loved Mog stories in a way that is easy to follow, warm in tone and full of charm.
With a small cast playing multiple roles and live music performed on stage at the piano by musical director and actor Daniella Agredo Piper, the show feels intimate, playful and reassuringly handcrafted.
Faye Lord is outstanding as Mog. Her physical performance is full of detail, with expressive facial reactions and perfectly judged movement that capture Mog’s forgetful yet stubborn nature brilliantly. Using a full range of miaows, she holds the audience’s attention throughout, supported by clever choreography and climbing all over the cleverly designed set.
The rest of the cast switch roles seamlessly, keeping the pace lively with inventive use of props that allow everyday objects to transform into something magical. Tom England gives a confident performance as the postman to open the show, and Mog's family are brilliantly portrayed by Jesse Meadows (Nicky), Aimee Louise Brown (Debbie), Heather Porte (Mrs Thomas) and Ben Vardy (Mr Thomas)
There is plenty here to keep little ones fully engaged, with some great original songs that will get everyone joining in and a beautiful final scene with snow falling and twinkling lights filling the theatre is genuinely heart-warming and met with wide-eyed delight.
This is a lovely example of locally produced theatre done exceptionally well, and a production the company should be very proud of. Mog’s Christmas holds its audience from start to finish, offering a calm, magical introduction to theatre for little ones that will bring your family together this Christmas.
