Residents in Potton can look forward to discovering more about their town's history next Easter, with plans underway for a community archaeological dig in April 2027.
Our archaeology service, Albion Archaeology, is supporting Potton History Society to organise 6 days of archaeological activity, provisionally planned for 1 to 3 April and 8 to 10 April 2027.
The event will involve digging small archaeological test pits at locations around Potton, looking for objects and other clues that could reveal more about the town's past.
Experienced members of Potton History Society will help lead the excavations, with guidance from professional archaeologists at Albion Archaeology.
Organisers also hope to involve Bedford's Young Archaeologists' Club, with opportunities for local schools and Scout groups to take part.
The history society will initially invite its own members to get involved, with further opportunities for local residents to volunteer potentially available nearer the time.
Plans are also being explored for some of the excavation sites to be open to the public, giving residents the chance to see archaeology in action and learn more about any discoveries.
Councillor Adam Zerny, Leader of Central Bedfordshire Council, said:
It's exciting to think what pieces of Potton's history might be waiting to be discovered just beneath our feet.
This is a great opportunity to bring the community together, learn more about the town's past and inspire younger generations to take an interest in local history. We're looking forward to seeing what the dig uncovers.
Further information about the event, including confirmed locations, volunteering opportunities and how you can visit, will be shared in early 2027.
For now, save the dates and look out for updates.
