Luton Town ended both their winless run in League One and an even longer wait for an away win with a 2-1 victory away at Wycombe Wanderers.

The Hatters had arrived in Buckinghamshire with no wins in their last 6 League One games and with no away win since winning at Stockport in early November.

But first half goals by Kai Naismith and Kasey Palmer did the trick for Jack Wilshere’s side as they ground out victory at Adams Park, with Junior Quitirna’s goal in stoppage time being insufficient for Wycombe to mount a late comeback.

A win means Luton move to 11th in the League One table, with the Hatters now 5 points from the play-offs in a congested race to make it to the top six.

Luton began the contest on the back foot, with Liam Harris denied by Josh Keeley in the early stages before Nathan Lowe hit the side netting and Jamie Mullins missed the target from close range.

Having got through the early pressure by the Chairboys, Luton then managed to find a 21st minute lead. The goal came from the recalled defender Naismith, who headed in from Liam Walsh’s corner.

This tipped the balance of play in Luton’s favour, and after the Hatters had missed a few half-chances, they would make it 2-0 after 39 minutes. Another corner would pay dividends for the visitors, as George Saville’s delivery found Palmer, and he in turn headed past Wycombe keeper Will Norris for his second goal in as many games.

Luton would do a good job of keeping Wycombe at arms’ length for the remainder of the contest, with the Chairboys unable to create many major chances for the majority of the rest of the game.

Wycombe would grab a goal back in the seventh minute of stoppage time, as Quirtina’s first-time drive would make its way home.

But while it ended Luton’s hopes of a first clean sheet since late January, Wycombe had too little time to grab another and it ended in the Hatters taking the three points.

Wilshere’s side now turn their attention to back-to-back home games as they attempt to build some momentum, with the Hatters due to welcome Exeter City and EFL Trophy final opponents Stockport County to Kenilworth Road over the upcoming week.
