A Sweet, Heartwarming Masterpiece at Milton Keynes Theatre
Carrie Hope Fletcher is a total powerhouse as Jenna. She doesn't just play the role—she completely owns the stage, captivating the audience from her very first song to the final bow. Her vocal strength and deep emotional resonance bring a raw vulnerability to the character, making every heartache and hope feel intensely real. Alongside her are two brilliant co-waitresses, Becky and Dawn, who form the beating heart of the show. Their natural chemistry creates an authentic bond of sisterhood, as they support, tease, chide, and love Jenna while bringing their own rich individual storylines to life.
The plot masterfully blends real emotional weight with top-tier, laugh-out-loud comedy. Jenna is trapped in an abusive, unhappy marriage to Earl, who constantly takes her hard-earned tip money to spend on alcohol and squander away. After discovering she’s pregnant, her desperation deepens, and she quietly begins hiding cash around the house, hoping against hope to save enough to forge a new path for herself and her baby.
Things take an unexpected turn when she meets her new gynaecologist, Dr. Pomatter. The sweet, awkward, and undeniably passionate dynamic between them offers a much-needed escape from her dreary life at home. Their scenes together strike a wonderful balance of romance and hilarity, which is only elevated by the brilliantly funny comedic beats involving the doctor's quirky receptionist.
The side stories are just as captivating and bring incredible energy to the show. Dawn, the delightfully anxious waitress who has never been in a relationship, takes a leap of faith on an online date—agreeing to meet for just five minutes. When her persistent suitor, Ogie, unexpectedly shows up at Joe's Pie Diner the next day, it leads to a truly show-stopping performance. The sheer commitment and physical comedy of the actor playing Ogie had the entire theater in stitches. Between massive cheers, roaring applause, and a mid-scene cartwheel that raised the roof, the room absolutely erupted with delight.
Meanwhile, diner regulars and staff bring even more warmth and texture to the stage. Old Joe, the curmudgeonly owner with a heart of gold, offers Jenna the quiet wisdom, grandfatherly support, and gentle encouragement she needs to wake up to her own worth and enter the local pie-baking contest. At the same time, Becky shares a fiery, unapologetic spark with Cal, the gruff chef, adding plenty of sharp humor and adult wit to the mix.
Visually and musically, this production shines in every single frame. The set design and stagecraft are exceptionally clever and seamless. Sliding blinds smoothly create diner windows, the pie shop kitchen transforms effortlessly into the doctor's examination room, and tables, chairs, and counter tops are whisked on and off by a remarkably sharp ensemble. Furthermore, the physical process of making pies on stage—flour flying through the air as emotions boil over—gives each baked creation genuine metaphorical meaning for the story unfolding.
Accompanied by Sara Bareilles’ beautifully produced score, every song fits the narrative like a glove and brings the inner thoughts of these characters straight into your heart. Waitress at MK Theatre is an absolute triumph—bright, colourful, deeply moving, and full of pie. Hand on heart, it is an incredible show that will leave you smiling long after the curtain falls!
