Al’s Pals is a heartfelt initiative founded in 2018 by Suzanne Brown, inspired by her father Alan Dumbell’s personal experience with cancer treatment at Milton Keynes University Hospital (MKUH). During his journey, Alan often expressed the need for a ‘buddy’—a companion to provide emotional support and alleviate feelings of isolation. In his memory, Al’s Pals was established to ensure no cancer patient in Milton Keynes faces their journey alone.

What They Do

Al’s Pals offers a comprehensive range of services designed to support cancer patients and their families both in hospital and at home:

  • Hospital Support: Volunteers visit patients at MKUH, offering companionship, a listening ear, and emotional support during treatment.

  • Home Support: Trained volunteers provide visits to patients' homes, assisting with daily tasks, offering respite for caregivers, and ensuring patients feel connected and supported.

  • Community Engagement: Through the “Al’s Pals & Me” Community Hub, the charity fosters a sense of community among patients and families, offering a space for shared experiences and mutual support.

  • Special Initiatives: Al’s Pals organises events such as afternoon teas and gala balls to raise funds and bring joy to patients and their families.

Making a Difference

Al’s Pals has become a vital part of the Milton Keynes community, offering more than just practical assistance. The charity provides emotional solace, helping patients navigate the challenges of cancer treatment with dignity and compassion. By addressing the emotional and social aspects of care, Al’s Pals enhances the overall well-being of patients and their families, ensuring they feel valued and supported throughout their journey.
