MK Dons to face Notts County in League 1 next season after Magpies beat Salford in play-off final

MK Dons will take on Notts County next season in League 1 after the Magpies beat Salford City 3-0 in the League 2 play-off final at Wembley.

Alassana Jatta, Lucas Ness and Jodi Jones scored the goals for County to confirm their promotion from the fourth tier, with Notts County returning to the third tier for the first time since the 2014/15 season.

In front of a crowd that featured Salford co-owners David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville, a Salford side managed by former MK Dons boss Karl Robinson simply had no answer to Notts County on a brutally hot day in London.

County’s victory sees them follow Bromley, MK Dons and Cambridge in winning promotion from the fourth tier to the third at the end of the 2025/26 season. The quartet will swap places with Exeter, Port Vale, Rotherham and Northampton, who were relegated from League One.

Lincoln, Cardiff and play-off winners Bolton all won promotion to the Championship, with Leicester, Oxford and Sheffield Wednesday going in the other direction after falling out of the second tier.

League One next season will include the following clubs:

  • AFC Wimbledon
  • Barnsley
  • Blackpool
  • Bradford City
  • Bromley
  • Burton Albion
  • Cambridge United
  • Doncaster Rovers
  • Huddersfield Town
  • Leicester City
