Human skeletal remains have been found in woodland near an A-road, Nottinghamshire Police have said.

Officers were called after the remains were discovered by members of the public near the A617 Rainworth Bypass at about 2.45pm on Saturday.

The remains are of a person yet to be identified, police said.

An investigation is under way and the area has been cordoned off, but the road remains open.

Detective Inspector Matt Scott, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "I understand a report of this nature will likely cause concern among the community; however, I would like to offer my reassurance this incident poses no risk to public safety.

"Whilst the investigation is still in its early stages, following inquiries carried out so far, I can confirm that the remains we have found are believed to be of one person.

"The identity of this person is yet to be established but a dedicated team of officers are working to confirm this as soon as possible.

"We have a dedicated team of specialist forensic officers carrying out lines of inquiry. This will help us better understand the circumstances of how the body came to be there and see if there is more information about the death which can be gathered."
