Northampton's troubles continues after conceding 4 on trip to Mansfield

Northampton Town suffered a 4-1 defeat away at Mansfield Town as their troubled form continued.

The Cobblers have now suffered four straight defeats, with the latest reverse leaving them 23rd in the League One table and 7 points from safety.

Braces by Will Evans and Lucas Akins decided the game in favour of the Stags, with a Cameron McGeehan goal in-between the third and fourth Mansfield goals proving to be a consolation.

Northampton had arrived chasing a boost after their recent downturn in form, but they would fall behind in Nottinghamshire after just 5 minutes. Evans was first to a loose ball, before holding off Northampton’s Jon Guthrie and getting the shot home.

Jake Evans nearly got the visitors on level terms immediately, only to put his shot wide, while just before the break, Northampton nearly had a breakthrough when McGeehan was denied by former Cobblers keeper Liam Roberts.

But the second half began badly for the Cobblers as they fell 2-0 down within 3 minutes of the restart. Akins got down the right flank for the Stags before putting in a cross that fell the way of Evans, and the scorer of Mansfield’s first grabbed his second.

As if that wasn’t enough, Northampton would then concede a third just after the hour, as Akins turned in the rebound after Jon Russell saw an initial strike hit the crossbar.

Northampton did get a consolation after 73 minutes when McGeehan scored from a Kyle McAdam ball into the box.

But Mansfield would make it 4 in stoppage time, as Akins turned in the rebound after his strike partner Evans had been denied by Lee Burge in a scramble at a corner.

That concluded the scoring, as Northampton left on the back of another defeat. The Cobblers have a weekend off due to internationals leading to the postponement of their trip to Barnsley next time out, meaning they return to action when they visit Bradford on Good Friday.
