Northampton Town were unable to return to winning ways after a 2-1 loss at Stockport County.

The Cobblers had drawn level as Cameron McGeehan cancelled out Josh Stokes’ early opener, but Kyle Wootton’s second half goal would take the points for the home side at Edgeley Park.

Defeat means the managerless Cobblers are now without a win in 8 League One matches, with the side remaining 23rd in the table. With 8 games to go, they are 7 points from safety.

In their second game since Kevin Nolan’s departure, Colin Calderwood had been hoping for Northampton to take something against a Stockport side who had lost their previous three outings.

But things started badly for the visitors as Stockport took the lead within two minutes, as Stokes picked up Oliver Norwood’s pass and saw a strike find the back of the net via a deflection that beat Lee Burge.

Stockport had opportunities to make it worse for the Cobblers, with Wootton hitting the post before Isaac Olaofe was denied by Burge.

Just before half-time, however, Northampton would find an equaliser. Corey Addai could only punch Kyle McAdam’s cross into the path of McGeehan, and the Northern Irishman duly tapped the ball home to equalise.

That goal would ensure Northampton were level at the break, but the hosts duly went on a charge after the break, as Burge made good saves to deny Olaofe and Jack Diamond. Wootton would also hit the bar in a fast start for Stockport.

A second goal for Stockport duly arrived just before the hour, as Wootton would turn in from Stokes’ cross.

Northampton’s best chance for an equaliser would see a McGeehan strike narrowly clear the bar, but the visitors ultimately ran out of time to find an equaliser as they slipped to a third straight loss.

The Cobblers will make a trip to Mansfield Town in their next assignment as they aim to avoid a fourth straight defeat.
