The former Northampton boss Jon Brady pulled off a major FA Cup upset at the weekend after his Port Vale side beat Sunderland 1-0.
Ben Waine’s goal in the first half was the winner as the side currently sat bottom of League One pulled off a big surprise result over Premier League Sunderland, winning at Vale Park in front of the TNT Sports cameras.
Victory put the Staffordshire side into the last 8 of the tournament, with the draw taking place later today (09/03) and the tie taking place in the weekend around Saturday April 4. Port Vale’s place in the next round will see them in the FA Cup Quarter Finals for the first time since 1954.
The result was the second time in a week that the Valiants have pulled off a cup upset, having beaten Championship side Bristol City in a re-arranged tie a few days earlier to set up their meeting with the Black Cats.
Despite their cup joy, Vale are the only side below Brady’s former employers Northampton in the table. They have 27 points, being 11 from safety, though they have played 4 games less than the Cobblers.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Brady voiced his happiness the game plan came together.
He said, “I’m in a little bit of shock really to be honest. Look, we worked out a game plan, worked very hard, we knew we had to suffer and be without the ball today, we knew the pitch might have helped us as well. We got the goal and we even had one or two half-chances on the break at the end because they were committing so many men forward. Joe Gauci (goalkeeper) makes a couple of incredible saves. So overall, yeah, really pleased.”
