Northampton take point from trip to Exeter

Northampton Town picked up a point after a goalless draw with Exeter City in Devon.

With nothing to split the two teams at St James’ Park, it meant that Northampton are now unbeaten in 3 games, though they remain without an away win in League One since winning on their last trip to Devon when they won at Plymouth in late November.

A point lifts Kevin Nolan’s side up two places in the table, with the Cobblers now 17th in the table. They are two points clear of the relegation zone, albeit from a weekend where none of the sides in League One’s bottom five played.

Having ended a long winless run last time out by beating Stevenage, Nolan’s side were looking for back-to-back league wins for the first time since September against a Grecians side who Northampton beat at Sixfields earlier this season.

The game came amid a backdrop of heavy speculation linking Exeter boss Gary Caldwell with the vacant job at Wigan Athletic, who sacked Ryan Lowe after falling into the League One relegation zone.

The home side began the brighter, with Ilmari Niskanen and Ethan Brierley missing the target with attempts before Jayden Wareham later had one effort blocked by a covering defender.

Wareham would later miss the target in first half stoppage time, before the Exeter striker nearly scored an own goal after the break as his header had to be denied by his own keeper Joe Whitworth, with Elliot List missing the target on the rebound.

Having avoided scoring an own goal, Wareham was then nearly on the money at the right end, with the Exeter striker denied by Ross Fitzsimons.

Cameron McGeehan would then get the ball into the goal, but an offside in the build up was penalised and the goal ruled out.

The match ultimately petered out, with both sides having to settle for a point at St James Park.

Northampton face a major test on Tuesday night, when they visit a Lincoln City side currently sat second in the table.
