There was yet more away day misery for Luton Town as they suffered a 1-0 loss at struggling Wigan Athletic.

The Latics took victory in their first match under newly appointed boss Gary Caldwell thanks to a a second half goal by former Luton striker Joe Taylor.

Defeat at the Brick Community Stadium was Luton’s sixth consecutive away defeat in League One, with the Hatters now 9th in the table and four points off the play-offs with 14 games of their season remaining.

Luton had arrived in Lancashire looking to bounce back from a defeat at the weekend to the league leaders Cardiff City, and seeking a first away win since winning at Stockport in early November.

The Hatters had the best opportunity of a tight first half, as a Kasey Palmer free-kick was denied by Wigan keeper Sam Tickle.

Wigan offered more after the break, with Josh Keeley making two saves in three minutes to deny Taylor.

What turned out to be the only goal of the night came after 73 minutes, as a counter attack ended in sub Dara Costelloe threading through Taylor, who placed a strike into the bottom corner.

Luton applied pressure in the aftermath of that, with Jordan Clark seeing a drive just fly wide in the final minutes.

An extraordinary sequence in the final minute of seven added at the end of the 90 then saw Luton have four separate shots blocked in the same attack by Wigan defenders, two of which being on the line by covering defenders, as the Hatters just couldn’t force the ball over the line.

It meant yet another away defeat for Jack Wilshere’s side, who will be seeking home comforts when they welcome Burton Albion and Plymouth to Kenilworth Road in their next two games.
