Luton Town have made a deadline day double signing, with the club signing Dutch midfielder Davy van den Berg and Norwegian midfielder Sverre Sandal.

Dutchman van den Berg joins the Hatters from Dutch side FC Utrecht on a season long loan with what Luton describe as a “conditional obligation” to buy the player outright at the end of the season, while Sandal arrives from Oslo-based Norwegian side KFUM on a permanent transfer. No fee or contract length was disclosed.

The double deal sees Luton move up to five signings in Jack Wilshere’s first transfer window in charge, following the previously announced arrivals of Devante Cole, Kasey Palmer and Emilio Lawrence.

van den Berg, 25, joins Luton from a side currently 12th in the Dutch Eredivisie. The midfielder, who is a graduate of the youth ranks at PSV Eindhoven, makes his first move out of the Netherlands. He scored one goal in nine appearances during his second spell with Utrecht.

Speaking to the official Luton Town website, van den Berg voiced his excitement to make the move to England.

He said, “I’m very excited, it’s the first time playing abroad for me. Let’s see what Luton and England can give to me and what I can give back to them.

“I always like to be creative and find solutions for the team and I like to think I have a good energy and attitude.

“Of course I remember Luton playing in the Premier League and the Championship, and hopefully we can make the step back up soon as possible.

“And I certainly think I can learn a lot from the manager, especially as a midfield player, and the way he played.”

Norwegian midfielder Sandal, 22, also makes his first move to England, having spent the last four years with the Oslo-based KFUM.

Sandal made 25 appearances in Norway’s Eliteserien for the side who finished 12th in the top flight of Norwegian football last season.

He said, “I’m very excited. Ever since I heard about the interest I’ve been looking forward to coming over, signing for Luton Town and giving my all.

“Everyone in Norway knows Luton’s story, and when I look at my former club, we’ve had a similar rise to the top division unexpectedly. I understand it’s been a tough two years, but it seems like we are in the beginning of rebuilding and it’s something I want to be a part of.

“I’ve seen that the fans are passionate and from what I’ve heard, Luton is a hard-working town, which is something that suits me well.

“I like to bring the game up the field, play forwards, win my duels, work hard and help the team. I’m so eager to prove myself here and can’t wait to start training.”
