Police have formally confirmed the identity of the victim after a man died following a stabbing in the centre:mk shopping centre.
The incident happened when a man died after being stabbed at around 5:10pm on Saturday evening (28/02) .
Thames Valley Police confirmed that the man has been identified as Gary Stanley, 52, from Milton Keynes. A post-mortem and formal identification will follow in due course.
Police also confirmed that Mr Stanley’s next of kin are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers.
Thames Valley Police confirmed that a 50 year-old man from Towcester has been charged with one count of murder and one count of possessing a knife in a public place. He is due to appear at Milton Keynes Magistrates’ Court later today (02/03).
The police force that covers Milton Keynes added that they are not looking for anyone else in connection with their ongoing murder investigation.
Yesterday, the shopping centre confirmed the victim had been one of their members of staff, since identified elsewhere on both social media and by Thames Valley Police. They also confirmed a book of condolence would be available for those who wish to sign it.
They said, “It is with profound sadness that we confirm the death of a member of our team following a tragic isolated incident at the centre.
“We have lost a dedicated and valued colleague, who was both a well-known and well-loved presence in our community. They were also devoted to their family and our deepest condolences are with them at this incredibly difficult time. A Book of Condolences will be placed at our Guest Services Lounge for anyone who would like to share a message.
“We will continue to cooperate fully with the authorities and will not comment further. We ask that the privacy of our colleague’s family and our team be respected at this difficult time.”
In a brief statement on social media, the centre:mk confirmed plans to re-open after being closed in the immediate aftermath of the incident.
They said, “We can confirm that the centre will re-open to the public at 10am today (Monday 2nd March). We appreciate your support and cooperation during this difficult time.”
Milton Keynes Central MP Emily Darlington, whose constituency covers the centre:mk, was among those to voice condolences.
In a statement on social media, she said, “I am saddened to hear that Gary Stanley, a security guard at Central Milton Keynes shopping centre, has lost his life after being attacked. My heart and condolences go out to his family and friends.
“This kind of violence is rare in Milton Keynes and will shock us all. It is important that we pull together to support the family and unite for our city.
“The suspect is in custody and the police are not aware of any further threat from this isolated incident. If you have any information on the incident, please contact the police.”
