Cobblers pick up point after draw with Peterborough

Northampton Town picked up a point after a 1-1 draw with Peterborough United at Sixfields.

The Cobblers had taken the lead in the Nene Valley Derby through Tom Eaves’ first half goal, before Peterborough equalised through Jimmy-Jay Morgan just after the break.

A point means Northampton sit 22nd in the League One table with 11 games of the season to go, with the Cobblers 2 points off the relegation zone.

Having suffered defeats in six pointers to Leyton Orient and Port Vale in midweek, Northampton faced another big test in the form of their local rivals Peterborough.

A reshuffled side did begin on the front foot, with Jake Evans denied by Alex Bass in the early stages before Eaves missed the target.

Lee Burge, who returned in goal for his first league appearance since September, made a stop to thwart James Dornelly in Peterborough’s first major opportunity, but the hosts were still posing a threat with Bass again making a good save to deny Evans.

Kyrell Lisbie was denied by a fine save from Burge, but the hosts generally looked likelier to score and it was Northampton that scored the game’s opening goal.

It would come for Kevin Nolan’s side in the 44th minute, as Tyrese Fornah’s cross picked out Eaves to head past Bass and put the Cobblers ahead.

Seven minutes into the second half, Peterborough would get back on level terms, as Lisbie cued up Morgan to finish past Burge.

The best chances in the remainder of the game came for Northampton, with Michael Forbes unable to finish from a set-piece return before Bass denied Fornah and the Posh keeper also came out to thwart Terry Taylor before the midfielder could shoot.

As it was, no winner would come the Cobblers’ way, and the game duly ended all square. The result did mean Northampton avoided suffering a fourth straight defeat, although they are now without a win in five.

The Cobblers face an EFL Trophy match against Luton Town in midweek, before their next league game sees them visit AFC Wimbledon next Sunday.
