In this deeply personal and emotional special edition of *Talking About My Generation*, hosts Lee Scriven and Del Bromham come together to honour the life and legacy of their dear friend and fellow musician, Graham Dee (Graham Saunders). A familiar and much-loved figure across the Milton Keynes music scene, Graham was not only admired for his world-class voice but also for his warmth, humility and generosity of spirit.

The episode features heartfelt tributes and candid memories from those who knew him best — including Dylan Jebb, Pete Lockwood and Martin Snape — as they reflect on his incredible journey from the early days with The Contenders and The Blues Collective to his later work with the Climax Blues Band. Together, they share moving stories of Graham’s brilliance on stage, his love for music, and his infectious humour off it.

Listeners are treated to tales of local gigs that became legendary, collaborations that shaped a generation of musicians, and the sense of community Graham fostered wherever he performed. Lee and Del also explore the evolution of the Milton Keynes music scene, reminiscing about shared moments with Graham and the many bands and characters that defined an era.

More than just a tribute, this episode captures the spirit of a man whose voice could silence a crowd and whose friendship inspired countless others. It’s a celebration of a true artist, a devoted musician, and a gentleman whose gravel drive dream, big heart and soulful sound will never be forgotten.

Blake Devitt – studio wizard, problem-solver and born raconteur – takes centre stage as Lee Scriven and Dell Brahman pull back the curtain on the magic (and the madness) of making records. Blake talks gear and glory: vintage consoles rescued from sheds, why analogue still sings in a way digital can’t, and the tiny human imperfections that give a recording its soul. He remembers legendary sessions, from tucked-away club dates to famous studio floors, and explains in plain English how producers and engineers coax the best out of performers.

The trio dig into studio lore — Olympic, Marshall, Lynford Manor and the quirks that turn a room into a sound — plus the pleasures of chasing a unique sonic signature. Blake argues for the value of patience, great ingredients and the right people, and weighs up the promise and peril of new tech, including AI, for music’s future. Along the way there are vivid anecdotes about session players, unforgettable gigs, sonic revelations (Stevie Wonder, Beach Boys, Beatles chatter), and the little moments that make a life in audio irresistible.

This is a nuts-and-bolts celebration of craft as much as a love letter to live music and recorded sound. Whether you’re an audiophile, a musician curious about the studio, or just love a good back-room story, Blake’s combination of technical insight and warm, funny storytelling makes this episode unmissable.

In this episode of Talking About My Generation, Lee Scriven and Dell Bromham are joined by the remarkable Chris Kemp – a key figure in the UK music scene and the man behind one of the country’s most important grassroots venues, The Pitz in Milton Keynes.

Chris shares his fascinating journey from his early love of rugby and dance to becoming one of the most influential promoters of his generation. He talks about transforming a former sports hall into a legendary live venue that attracted fans from across Europe, staging unforgettable gigs with the likes of PJ Harvey, Iron Maiden, Babes in Toyland, and countless others.

The conversation takes us through iconic live music memories – including Freddie Mercury’s magic at Knebworth, the raw power of thrash metal, and the genius of albums like Tubular Bells. Chris also discusses the challenges of running venues inside council buildings, the importance of relationships with agents and bands, and how marketing live music has evolved from posters on underpasses to the digital world of social media.

Along the way, expect stories of wild gigs, daring ideas that nearly went wrong, and the lessons learned from decades in live music promotion. We also hear about Chris’s later work as a safety officer for major festivals and arenas, including Roskilde and Champions League finals, and why safety, service, and experience matter more than ever.

This is more than a chat about music – it’s a masterclass in the history of live shows, promotion, and what it takes to keep the magic alive.

Karl shares his first record (Meat Loaf’s Bat Out of Hell), first gig (Groove Armada), and his most unforgettable shows – including Richard Ashcroft at the Royal Albert Hall and Alanis Morissette’s MTV Unplugged in Miami. He also recalls formative football moments, from John Barnes’ iconic runs to Liverpool’s greatest victories.

The trio explore the cultural heartbeat of Liverpool and Manchester, imagining the return of legends like Freddie Mercury, Steve Marriott, Jimmy Greaves and Diego Maradona, while debating dream gigs such as The Beatles at Shea Stadium or The Eagles in their early days.

You’ll also hear their fascinating breakdown of how band roles mirror football positions – from goalies as drummers to strikers as lead singers – plus stories about legendary managers, unsung kitmen, and the adrenaline highs of both stadiums and stages.

Join Lee Scriven and Dell Bromham (from Stray) on Talking About My Generation as they host Colin Kempster, also of Stray. Colin shares highlights from Stray's recent Nene Valley Rock Festival gig at Grimsthorpe Castle, where their tent was packed, with fans dancing outside, enjoying a "great sound".

The discussion explores the evolution of **live sound technology**. Both Dell and Colin note improved venue and festival sound, crediting skilled engineers using iPads. Colin uses in-ear monitors, contrasting with Dell's "Berlin Wall" of amps. They recall Stray purchasing a formidable **Kelsey Morris 5000 watt American PA system from UFO** after a 1974/75 Roundhouse show, later renting it out. Ironically, in the early '70s, American bands like Poco and The Byrds sought British WHMP PA systems, while British bands coveted American gear. Colin experienced the "best live sound" at a festival in Sweden.

Colin's musical journey began with Thin Lizzy's "Dancing in the Moonlight," and T-Rex and AC/DC albums. His first gig was **Queen at Hyde Park in 1976**, promoting "A Night at the Opera," an "overwhelming" experience. A school friends' garage band, Saturn Probe, playing blues rock, inspired him to become a musician. International fans show staggering commitment, with some flying from Canada and Australia to see Stray play.

The episode delves into **music videos and iconic figures**. Michael Lindsay-Hogg's pioneering work is celebrated, including The Beatles' "Hey Jude" – praised for its natural, unscripted audience interaction. He also directed "Jumping Jack Flash," "Paperback Writer," "Rain," and "Rock and Roll Circus". **Keith Moon's drumming** for The Who is lauded as perfectly suited to the band's chemistry. Supertramp, who once opened for Stray, used an umbrella over their drum kit to contain sound. Producer Ken Scott is credited with saving Supertramp from being dropped. The rapid recording and release of The Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" within weeks in the '60s highlights the efficiency of old record labels. Stray even opened for **KISS in 1976** during their first English dates; ironically, Stray had previously faced criticism for using pyrotechnics.

The "Bass Players" segment covers Colin's admiration for **John Entwistle, Roger Waters, Geezer Butler, Lemmy (for attitude), and John Deacon**, whose playing "sits nicely in the mix". Dell praises Colin for playing "for the song," not to "showboat". They emphasize the crucial "unit" relationship between bass and drums. Stories include Carol Kaye learning bass on the spot for a session, and the "Wrecking Crew". Colin recounts re-recording a bassline for Stray's "Living the Dream" remotely due to COVID, highlighting the challenge of changing a core feel. Famous baselines discussed include "These Boots Are Made for Walking," "Another One Bites the Dust," "Walk on the Wild Side," and "Peaches". **Andy Fraser's unique contribution to Free** is highlighted. Colin and Dell recall **Norman Watt-Roy** improvising a bass solo when Wilko Johnson broke a string mid-song. Lee expresses disdain for **six-string basses**, calling them "absurdities," while Colin offers a more nuanced view.

The episode underscores Stray's camaraderie as "five mates who go out for a laugh". Dell shares a humorous anecdote about a bass player sabotaging a bingo machine at a working men's club gig.

Next week, they chat with Paul Rivers about running a small music venue.

Lee Scriven and Del Bromham welcome former Stray frontman Pete Dyer for a vivid, boots-on-the-ground journey through the late-60s/70s British rock scene and the band’s own twists and turns. Pete traces his path from west London dance halls and youth-club stages to joining Stray, recalling Friday-night gigs, a White City talent contest they narrowly lost to a crooning duo, and catching The Who back in their Detours days around Acton and Harrow.

The trio dig into what made those rooms electric — the wall of lads down the front, dodgy PAs, and that moment when the crowd “clicked” — before shifting to studio life: trying to bottle the band’s live punch on record, arguing for feel over fuss, and why some classic tracks should be left as they were rather than “fixed” decades later.

They riff on The Beatles’ influence — from writing for others (Billy J. Kramer, Badfinger) to famous covers — and on producers who shaped entire eras, from Spector’s cavernous drama to the modern tech that can unpick old mono tapes. There’s a cracking Stray origin tale too: the producer-manager who signed them while managing Black Sabbath, first pitching them as the “new Sabbath”, then, after hearing those stacked harmonies, calling them “the new Beatles”.

Road stories abound: weekenders at Butlins, dashing straight to a heavy London club night (Live Evil) expecting a hostile crowd and instead bringing the house down, and the eternal realities of long coach trips, tiny fees, and big adrenaline. Looking ahead, Del and Pete talk about dusting off deep cuts, twin-lead guitar magic, and fresh dates — including a Nene Valley-type festival slot — with the same humour and camaraderie that powered Stray from the start.

In this episode of *Talking About My Generation*, hosts Lee Scriven and Del Black are joined by special guest Martyn Snapes for a deep dive into one of rock’s most iconic albums – Bruce Springsteen’s *Born to Run*. The trio explore the album’s creation, the immense pressure Springsteen faced from his record label, and how the LP not only saved his career but cemented his status as a rock legend. From the famous 1975 Hammersmith Odeon performance to the timeless running order that makes the record feel like a cinematic journey, the conversation is packed with insights, humour, and fascinating stories from the music world.

Along the way, they discuss legendary live performances by The Who, Dr. Feelgood, and Phil Lynott, the impact of stagecraft on rock history, and how photography can define an artist’s image for decades. Del shares tales from the road, including the night he missed seeing Springsteen because of an unexpected cocktail marathon, while Martyn reflects on his own career, the influence of pressure in songwriting, and albums that shaped his musical journey.

The episode also pays tribute to the late Terry Reid – the “musician’s musician” – and celebrates his incredible voice, career, and influence. Whether you’re a lifelong Springsteen fan, a music history buff, or just love great rock stories, this is an episode you won’t want to miss.

In this cracking episode of Talking About My Generation, Lee Scriven and Del Bromham are joined by singer, guitarist and rock storyteller John Verity. John shares jaw-dropping tales from a life in music: sneaking his first guitar into the house, being managed by his dad under the name Johnny V, and gigging between a comedian and a stripper in working men’s clubs!

He talks about his time in soul bands, unexpected residencies in the Bahamas, and how he ended up sharing a stage with Jimi Hendrix — with a shady manager who turned out to be a Miami drug kingpin. John also reveals what it was really like joining Argent, pushing himself to keep up with top musicians, and how he’s still gigging and writing today. Expect warm laughs, surprising confessions, and loads of rock’n’roll history told exactly as it happened — no PR spin, just pure, honest stories from a true survivor of the British rock scene.

In this unmissable episode of Talking About My Generation, Lee Scriven and Del Bromham sit down with Terry Marshall — a true icon of rock history and the son of Jim Marshall, founder of the legendary Marshall Amplification. Terry shares incredible behind-the-scenes stories of how a small family drum shop in the 1960s exploded into a global brand that defined the very sound of rock’n’roll.

From his own early days playing saxophone in dance halls and rock’n’roll bands to jamming late into the night with Britain’s biggest guitarists, Terry reveals how Marshall’s famous amps came to life — thanks to friendships and countless tweaks requested by legends like Pete Townshend and Eric Clapton. Discover how Terry’s desire for the perfect tone and sheer love for music shaped the classic Marshall ‘stack’ and gave guitarists that unmistakable growl that would shake stadiums for decades to come.

With Del Bromham adding his own first-hand memories of touring with Stray and using Marshalls on stage, this episode is packed with fascinating anecdotes about jam sessions, the Fleer Rackers, The Who, Mitch Mitchell, Cream and the amplifier secrets that changed musical history. Expect nostalgic tales about rock’s golden age, the magic of Marshall’s supportive ethos for musicians, and the timeless truth that the right amp can change everything.

Settle in for an hour of pure music heritage with three people who lived it, built it — and are still playing it loud today.

Lee and Del speak to Jonathan Maitland about his new show WILKO: Love and Death and Rock'N'Roll about the life of Wilko Johnson which opens tonight at the Leicester Square Theatre in London, running until 27 July 2025.

The extraordinary story of Wilko Johnson: rock 'n' roll icon, founder of the legendary band Dr Feelgood and Game of Thrones star.

In 2012, Wilko was told he had inoperable cancer and a year to live. Refusing all treatment, he decided to spend his last months living meaningfully: seeing the people, places and things which meant most to him during his remarkable life.

Suddenly, he was bigger than ever and headline news all over the world. He recorded a number one album with Roger Daltrey, embarked on a sold-out final farewell tour, and was described by a national newspaper as “Our Greatest Living Englishman.” And then, a miracle happened…

A hilarious, moving, exciting mixture of drama, comedy and live rock 'n' roll, Wilko: Love and Death and Rock ‘n’ Roll tells the amazing, uplifting true story of Wilko, the punk pioneer, poet, philosopher and astronomer.

Del Bromham of the legendary rock band Stray and Scribbo from the infamous Blues Collective return for another episode of Talking About My Generation, the podcast that reflects on the golden age of rock music, current trends, and topical talking points.

This week, Del and Scribbo dive into the challenges facing live music venues and ask whether iconic spots like the Marquee should’ve been preserved as listed buildings. They debate if Exile on Main Street was the Rolling Stones' finest work and whether being in a band still carries the same allure it once did.

The conversation turns to the cultural importance of music shops and the sadness of seeing them vanish from the high street, alongside stories from their own experiences living through rock’s heyday and navigating the changes of the modern music scene.

Insightful, nostalgic, and packed with personality, this episode is a heartfelt tribute to live music and the places that made it magic.

In the very first episode of Talking About My Generation, Del Bromham of legendary rock band Stray and Scribbo from the infamous Blues Collective kick off their brand-new podcast with a deep dive into the golden age of rock. They reminisce about their first records bought, first gigs attended, and the artists who shaped their musical journeys.

Expect reflections on the game-changing Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the debate over meeting your heroes, and how the ’60s and early ’70s didn't just bring new songs – they introduced revolutionary new sounds.

Del and Scribbo also explore the role of the often-unsung heroes behind the desk – the pioneering producers and engineers of the era – and share their thoughts on how festivals and live music have become big business.

Packed with personal stories and decades of insight, this episode is a must-listen for anyone who lived through – or wishes they had – the most iconic era of rock music.
