Northampton Town ended their losing run with a draw as their clash at Barnsley ended 2-2.
Max Dyche’s goal saw Kevin Nolan’s side take a point, ending a run of four straight defeats. The visitors had taken the lead early through Nesta Guinness-Walker, fallen behind to goals from David McGoldrick and Adam Phillips, then saw Dyche strike to hand them a point.
A point in Yorkshire sees the Cobblers remain 23rd in the league table, but they are now just a point from safety.
After a mixed transfer deadline day that saw Northampton sign 2 players but miss out on other targets, the Cobblers arrived at Oakwell needing a boost and seemed to get one when they scored after just 3 minutes. Guinness-Walker swept in a rebound after Cameron McGeehan’s shot was denied by home keeper Owen Goodman.
Vimal Yoganathan missed the target as the Tykes sought a quickfire response, with the home side applying pressure on the Northampton goal in the moments after the opener.
A goal would come Barnsley’s way on the half-hour mark. Veteran striker McGoldrick got the goal, with the 38-year-old scoring from Scott Banks’ free-kick.
Both sides would spurn opportunities before Barnsley made it 2-1 just after the hour mark. Substitute Phillips would be the scorer as he received McGoldrick’s deflected pass and saw his own deflected effort find the back of the net.
But Northampton would find a response, equalising less than ten minutes later as Kamarai Swyer picked out Dyche to head home.
The Cobblers’ pursuit of a first league win since December 19th will next see them welcome Stevenage to Sixfields on Saturday.
