MK City Council announces updated sustainability strategy

Milton Keynes City Council have announced a new and updated its Sustainability Strategy to focus on practical steps that cut energy use, reduce household bills, and deliver long‑term benefits for local people.

The city council said that they have refreshed the strategy following a public consultation, where more than 80% of local people, businesses and community groups said the existing plan needed updating.

MK City Council’s revised strategy aims to provide a direct response to that feedback and sets out clear actions to help households save money, improve neighbourhoods and support the long‑term health and resilience of the city.

The refreshed strategy is built around five key areas:

• Economy – expanding local skills and helping local businesses grow sustainably, creating jobs
• Energy – improving the energy efficiency of buildings to lower bills and create warmer, healthier homes
• Emissions – improving bus services, and making sure local people have options for walking and cycling routes, and cleaner vehicles
• Environment – protecting and enhancing the city’s much‑loved parks, lakes and wildlife habitats
• Engagement – strengthening partnerships with communities, local groups, businesses and organisations to become more effective

Cabinet Member for Planning and Placemaking, Cllr Shanika Mahendran, said, “This strategy is designed to make a real and positive difference for people across Milton Keynes. By cutting energy use and improving the quality of our homes, neighbourhoods and green spaces, we can help reduce household bills, improve health and wellbeing, and create new opportunities for local people.

“These are practical changes that benefit everyone. We’re looking forward to working closely with communities and partners as we put this plan into action and build a greener, cleaner and fairer city together.”
