Age UK Northamptonshire is a long-standing charity dedicated to helping older people in Northamptonshire live well, stay connected, and remain independent for as long as possible. They support over 18,000 older adults each year through a wide range of services tailored to meet real, everyday needs. Website: www.ageuknorthants.org.uk
What They Do
Information & Advice Service: Free, confidential guidance on benefits, housing, health, care options, legal issues, wills, and more—helping older people and their families navigate complex systems.
Care Support at Home: Assisting with home support and companionship to help those aged 55+ stay in their own homes. Support ranges from regular visits to help with shopping, cleaning or laundry.
Collaborative Care: Working with GP surgeries in the eastern part of the county to provide free home visits, helping older residents feel safe and supported at home.
Community Responder Volunteer Service: Volunteers visit people at home following a health referral—to check welfare, collect prescriptions, help after a fall, or simply offer company until health or social care support arrives.
Day Centres & Social Activities: Day-centres in areas such as Towcester, Northampton, Kettering where older people can meet, take part in activities, socialise, and receive support in a welcoming environment.
Extra Practical Support: Handyperson service (minor repairs, safety measures), home cleaning, lawn/garden help, toenail-cutting, etc., making life easier and safer for those who find these tasks difficult.
How It Helps Disadvantaged & Diverse Communities
Age UK Northamptonshire plays a crucial role in reaching those most vulnerable: older adults who may be isolated, living on low incomes, with limited mobility, or from under-represented backgrounds. Their community responder and befriending services help reduce loneliness. Their advice service helps people maximise benefits and access vital support. They tailor support to many areas of Northamptonshire, both urban and rural, to ensure people are not left behind just because of where they live.
How You Can Support or Get Involved
Volunteer: There are many roles—Community Responder, Handyperson, Telephone Befriender, Day Centre helper, Admin, Reception, Shop-volunteer, etc. Even giving just a few hours a week makes a real difference.
Donate or Fundraise: Whether one-off gifts, regular donations, legacy giving, or fundraising events—money helps sustain and grow services.
Leave a Legacy: Gifts in Wills help ensure Age UK Northamptonshire can keep offering help for future generations.
Shop & Support Trading Services: They run shops and a trading subsidiary selling products designed for later life. Profits go back into services.
Spread the Word: Letting older people, their families or neighbours know about the services can help those who might otherwise struggle in silence.
Age UK Northamptonshire helps change later life for the better—keeping people safe, respected, and part of their community.
