Luton Town announce triple signing of Nahki Wells, Hakeem Odoffin and Nigel Lonwijk

Luton Town have announced three new signings, with the Hatters confirming the signings of Nahki Wells, Hakeem Odoffin and Nigel Lonwijk.

The trio of new arrivals were confirmed today (10/07), with Wells, Odoffin and Lonwijk joining Luton’s first team squad at their training camp in Slovenia.

The news sees the trio become the latest arrivals at Luton in the 2025 summer transfer window, making it six new signings after the previously announced arrivals of Kal Naismith, George Saville and Jake Richards in moving to Bedfordshire.

Striker Wells joins on a free transfer after over 5 years with Championship side Bristol City, defender/midfielder Odoffin also arrives on a free after leaving Rotherham United, and fellow defender Lonwijk has joined on loan from Wolves, with the Hatters having an option to make the deal permanent.

Wells has arrived from Ashton Gate, having left Bristol City after 5 1/2 years. The 35-year-old has signed a contract of undisclosed length at Kenilworth Road. He scored 48 goals in 237 appearances for the Robins, with Wells helping Bristol City to reach the play-offs in his final season at the club.

Before then, Wells had spells across the top divisions of English football with Carlisle, Bradford, Huddersfield, Burnley and QPR.

Matt Bloomfield talked up Wells in an arrival interview with the Luton Town website, saying he would provide goalscoring nous and leadership to his remodelled side.

He said, “Nahki is a proven goalscorer, has fantastic experience and good leadership too. He’s someone with extreme know-how and a real desire to still go and score goals, a real desire to go and achieve something and a real desire to be a part of what we are building.

“He is someone who is so highly thought of in the world of football. Some of the references I had about him were just incredible.

“He is someone who is obviously really well-known and liked within the game, highly respected and someone with a real know-how in the penalty area, which is what we’re really pleased to be bringing into the building.”

Odoffin, who can play as either a full-back, centre-back or defensive midfielder, joins after leaving Rotherham United, with the 27-year-old having been voted Player of the Year and Player’s Player of the Year with the Millers last season.

He had joined Rotherham in 2021 from Scottish side Hamilton Academical and has been a regular at Championship and League One level for the side from South Yorkshire. He played over 50 times for Rotherham in all competitions last season.

Bloomfield said, “Hakeem is a real leader and someone I’ve been aware of for a number of years. I know the club have been following him closely as well.

“He knows the level, knows how to win at the level and he can play in a variety of positions in defence and midfield, which absolutely helps. He is someone who we feel can have the personality and character to have a real impact for us.

“He’s a London boy and he’s been away from home for a number of years. When I met him a week or two ago, he’d been home to see his mum and he had a big smile on his face, so it’s nice when it seems to fit at the right stage of his life and his career.”

Lonwijk is the Hatters’ third recruit of the day, arriving at Kenilworth Road on loan from Wolves. The deal is described as a season-long loan with Luton describing the deal as containing, “an obligation to purchase if certain criteria are met within the loan period”.

The Dutchman played for Bloomfield at Wycombe on loan in 2024, with the defender having also had loan spells away from Wolves with Dutch outfit Fortuna Sittard, Plymouth, Swiss side Grasshopper and Huddersfield Town. His CV includes being a regular for Plymouth in the 2022/23 season when they were promoted as League One champions.

Bloomfield said, “We had Nige for a few months at the end of season before last at Wycombe and he was fantastic for us. I tried to get him back last summer but we didn’t have as much money as Huddersfield at that point, so I couldn’t get him, but he’s someone who we think highly of.

“He’s had a bit of a stop-start season last year and he’s not quite hit the heights that we all believe he can get to, but he’s got a really high ceiling and is another great lad.

“He’s got good versatility and can play anywhere in the back four or back five, and has incredible athleticism, he’s really good on the ball and we’re really pleased to give him a home.”
